Consultancy Services
Over the years The Plantsman Nursery has supplied plants to many major organisations including in the UK, The Royal Botanical Garden Kew and other UK botanic gardens, Wisley RHS Garden, Rosemoor RHS garden, The Eden Project, the ‘@Bristol’ project, The Living Rainforest project and to the Royal Household gardens at Buckingham Palace and Clarence House and many commercial interior butterfly wildlife attractions. Overseas we have supplied plants to several US botanic gardens (before we ceased exporting outside the EU in 2002) and the newly expanded Bordeaux botanic garden and countless other public, commercial and private plant projects. |
|
It is however normally unusual for nurserymen to follow progress of their plants once they have left the nursery and it was several customers with London gardens that sowed the seed for our interest in growing new plants in milder locations that had never been tried outside before. In some ways I can thank global warming as there is no doubt whatsoever in my own mind that the UK is milder than 40 years ago when I was a child growing up in London. I am sure also that the expansion of London has also played a part in increasing the microclimate warming effect. Whatever the fundamental reasons and environmental issues are, I am grateful for the opportunity. The door has been thrown wide open regarding the new range of material that can be grown and over the last 8 years in particular we have trialled many sub tropical and half hardy plants in a variety of locations within the UK and Europe. |

| The success of so many unusual flowering climbers and plants attracted much attention and as these garden matured we began to offer planting advice as a service. In several gardens where hard landscaping work was carried out we worked & collaborated with garden designers but the vast majority of work we have done is in the small conservatory where we have worked with the existing or newly built layout and structure. In several instances we have worked on conservatories right from conception. |
|
| We have planted in very cold, mild and sub tropical spaces but wherever and whatever we believe our extensive plant knowledge and experience of actually growing so many different unusual plants gives us a unique ability to create sublime small luxuriantly green and tropical spaces. It is perhaps not surprising that garden designers tend to trot out the same plants in project after project and some of the interior planting we have seen is little short of diabolical and uninspiring. The ‘planting plan/map’ or choice of what plant goes where is incredibly important and knowledge of what not to plant is just as important with interior spaces where pest problems must always be considered. However nearly as important is the knowledge of up to date technology, methods and professional materials that should be used for watering/irrigation, shading, ventilation, containers, soil mixes, feeding, support structures and trellis and tension wiring, much of which should be installed by professional skilled workman familiar with this equipment. |

All these disciplines and professional skills come together to create an impressive result tailored to the clients requirements.
Because of the success of the gardens and conservatories we have previously planned and been involved with, and in part from the encouragement of their owners we have launched this webpage describing our services. |

There are many designers and other companies who offer services but if you look at the plants that are used in their stock lists the results can hardly be different. In my opinion there is no excuse for using Ivy, Choisia etc. and the same shrubs that can be seen in the local drive in MacDonald’s or Sainsbury’s car parks, however tough and low maintenance they maybe. These plants belong in amenity horticulture and are perfect in the local
B & Q car park but we feel its pure laziness to include them in intimate living and working spaces where atmosphere is required. Success comes from not only a synergy of correct plant choice, plant merit and placement and hard landscaping but also by constantly pushing the boundaries and by planting what has not been used in the mainstream. By trialling so much new material in situ we have added a completely new ‘string to our bow’ and can create a unique visual effect that at the least will please and soothe and at best can be surprisingly breathtaking.
